Is Now the Best Time to Get a 3DS?

By Kyle on Apr 26 2012 09:17 AM
Today, Nintendo confirmed that the recent price cut for the 3DS, is putting the company at a loss. During the company's earning report, Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's President, stated "its hardware has been sold below cost because of its significant price cut in the fiscal year ended March 31,2012," Then he proceeded to state "Nintendo expects to cease selling it below cost by the middle of the fiscal year March 31, 2013."

With that last statement, it sounds like Nintendo is planning on a price increase in the near future. How much or an exact date is still up in the air, but none the less it seems like a great time to take advantage of the current price, and grab your own handheld 3D device.

Do you think it is a smart move to increase the price? Let us know in the comments below.

Nintendo will not increase the price of the 3DS hardware to recoup from its reported loss. When have they ever increased the price of hardware to make up for a loss? I don't ever recall them doing something so desperate. The statements made by Iwata are optimistic. What Nintendo will end up doing, like they always do, is making up for their losses by giving their consumers a unique gameplay experience via software.

Should I list all the titles for the current fiscal year to prove that?

Even then, most likely between August and November, will Nintendo bounce back from its losses and break even, which is what their goal is for this fiscal year. Will they make profit this FY? I guess we'll find out sometime next year. If they do, it won't be significant though.
I think it has more to do with a restructuring of its components or a release of a 3DS lite than anything else.
I still belive in the DSi and think the 3DS is just a gimmick that will fade over time.

I believe any 3DS owner will tell you it's not a gimmick. The 3D aspect in the 3DS is a great feature.

Here's what the 3DS features:
  • Graphics that's almost as good as the Wii.
  • A Stereoscopic 3D option.
  • An online store that blows DSiWare out of the water.
  • An easy to use online gaming system.
What part of those features are considered a "gimmick?" If the 3DS fades prematurely, handheld gaming as we know it will die.
3DS won't die, and I don't think they'll raise the price, because that's just kind of poor business to do that, and it won't help them.
Well Not everyone is converting just yet and 3d is something not everyone needs.enough said.
Where the hell is my negative rep? You're basing your opinion off of zero facts or knowledge of the subject. Frankly, you're tainting good discussion. Have you at least experienced a 3DS? If not, start there.

Not everyone is upgrading because the 3DS is frequently sold out in the major cities. My local WalMart and Target couldn't keep up with the demand since the fall of last year.

Why are you basing your opinion only on the 3D mode? What happened to judging a handheld based on its available gameplay?

The 3D is optional, you know. Also, after the Pokemon games come out, DS development will fall off quite a bit. You'd be stuck looking backward instead of forward.
Well my opinion  formed quite early on about this and considering I am not much of a gamer anymore and most of my gaming is done via the computer these days and anyhow why even go to the 3DS when my DSi XL suites me just fine. and your right I never experienced the 3DS but I do know I don't wanna get wrapped up in a whole another system when I haven't used what I got all that much to begin with.
I know that the company needs to make money. This is not just for them but to keep their investors happy. I am just not sure how the public will take to a low price being raised. I do not think that happens much at all, aside from holiday/non-holiday sales.
I don't think they'll raise the price either.. it may have been a trick, like imply that the price may rise in the future to get ppl to get the 3ds now and increase sales? But I agree that sales may get better towards August.. personally anyone who hasn't tried it yet really should.. I know I wasn't interested at all until my friend showed me all its qualities n once games came out for it I decided to get one and I certainly don't regret it one bit!
