The Land of the Rising Sun gets Metallic Red 3DS in June.

Nintendo of Japan have just just announced that they are adding a Metallic Red 3DS to their already vibrant 3DS library starting Thursday, June 13th. This hot little 3DS will retail for 15,000 Yen (approx. equal to $148 US Dollars) and will include a 4GB SD (Secure Digital) Card.

Nintendo of Japan apparently have every intention on introducing as many colors to the 3DS lineup as possible. At the end of February, they announced the Light Blue and Glass Pink 3DS. Here's the different colored standard 3DS models that Japan currently have, excluding any special-themed hardware.
  • Metallic Red
  • Light Blue
  • Gloss Pink
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Ice White
  • Misty Pink
  • Flare Red
  • Cosmo Black
  • Aqua Blue
Fans in North America and Europe have one simple question. Why?

Why? Because if anyone doesn't already own a 3DS, they might consider it because of an irresistible urge to buy it in their favorite color! It happened to me. I didn't have a 3DS XL, nor did I really feel the desire to buy one, but once I saw there was a Limited Edition Special Pikachu Edition 3DS XL, I immediately wanted to get my hands on one. As far as themed 3DS XLs go, I believe that is a way to make someone want to not only purchase the console, but the matching game it is themed after.

It's not a 3DS XL.
That colour reminds me of my battered first car...I'd consider picking one up if it was in Europe.

I know, that's why I mentioned if anyone didn't already own a "3DS", they might consider it because it's in their favorite color. I just used my Pikachu 3DS XL as an example.

I see. I apologize for the misunderstanding. Unfortunately, you're speaking only for Japanese fans. You know, I'm not really sure what the deal is for North America and Europe when it comes to this kind of thing.

Very true. It's hard to think that 3DS is not selling well in Japan, so why would they need to make so many different colors/themes to promote them in Japan? Doesn't make much sense...
Let's not overwhelm the North American, European, and Australian consumer with choices. We'll just cater solely to Japan.

I'm glad to see the 3DS is still getting new colors, I love mine. It was relatively pocket-friendly until I got that Nyko battery pack that added like a brick to the back of it in return for twice the battery life. I might just get a regular battery to return it to its slim former self for bathing suit season. :P

I want the metallic green! We were promised metallic green! Why you eat my heart, Nintendooooooooooooooo?!

But I do love some of the patterns and art on the limited edition 3DS XL systems. I'm just not cool enough to pull off something like a Pikachu 3DS XL. I haven't graduated from cool school 'cause I keep skippin' out on my classes. It's just the-wrong-side-of-the-tracks Cosmo Black 3DS for me.
That is a sharp looking console. I'd consider switching from my Aqua Blue 3DS to that red if it were available in North America.
This is a nice color but I am over the original model. XL only.

I'm just making an assumption here, but I don't think Nintendo's English branches really care about the standard 3DS anymore. Same tends to go for any major company in English speaking regions, especially Sony in regards to the PlayStation Portable. Once there's a newer form of hardware available, the older stuff more or less loses all support.

I give major props to Nintendo HQ for continuing to offer newer options with the 3DS. Some people may not like the current colours available, but they may also not like the 3DS XL for whatever reason. I just wish that NoA and NoE would think the same way.

Personally, I like the XL for its smoother design, as playing games like Kid Icarus are murder on my hands. But in the end, I still vastly prefer the original model for its size. It is supposed to be a portable console, after all. The XL variations of the DS line tend to defeat the initial purpose of a portable console.
