New Super Mario Bros. 2 Announced

By Kevin on Apr 21 2012 12:25 AM
Earlier today, Nintendo's President Satoru Iwata, made an announcement that put a lot of our speculations to rest. This August (yes, this year), New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be released in Japan and North America for the Nintendo 3DS. Mario's newest adventure is a 2D, direct sequel to the 2006 hit New Super Mario Bros., for the Nintendo DS.

Although no gameplay footage was revealed during the conference, there were several screenshots shown, which displayed some pretty neat stuff. In one of the screenshots, for instance, Raccoon Mario is shown flying through the air. Noteworthy to this image was the power meter, (for flying) shown in the lower-left part of the screenshot. Perhaps we'll see the P-Wing make a return. Also, in another screenshot, Mario is seen charging through a stage while golden, yes golden. This is definitely something new to the franchise. I'm dying to learn more about that. Other interesting details revealed in the screenshots were golden Piranha Plants and Koopa Troopas, and climbable spider webs.

The different screenshots can be seen here, via Esuteru.

I'd probably still buy it, but the recent Mario games are missing something. They just aren't what they used to be. A good step in the right direction would be to get rid of the linearity of previous games.
No doubt I'll purchase this. I really don't think Nintendo will veer too much off the path that the Main series Mario titles are on. As in, they'll maintain that linear gameplay style; especially for the side-scroller titles such as this one.
I will also buy this game and i heard it has multiplayer co op? I will definitly enjoy playing this game with others if that is true.. (i know super mario bros wii was really fun to play with others!)

Yes, that's correct.

I couldn't stand playing co-op. Well, I do like playing co-op with my son though. We pretty much laugh the entire time while we stomp on each other's heads and dodge one another's bubbles. That's a really good time, actually. Aside from that, I just want to beat the levels, free of having to worry about keeping track of anyone.
Haha that's funny we did that too but playing with someone younger isn't as fun as someone equal to your skill level lol

You make a good point there. Side scrolling Mario games really wont change too much. They will save the really unique and new ideas for Paper Mario and Mario Galaxy type games.
They seem to add new items to side scrolling games.. or thats how it seems to me..

...which makes sense, really. If they didn't, think about how repetitious the game would feel as compared to previous Mario side-scrollers. I'm really excited for this one though. And that 1,000,000 coin challenge? That, simply, sounds very addicting and I can't wait to see what the "prize" is gonna be once that achievement is attained.
YES YES YES :kitty: I love collecting things for a goal! like im still collecting coins for that gold kart in mario kart lol its the only one i need! And i hope the prize is awesome and something you can show off to others lol :cowboy:
The New Super Mario Bros 2 website has been updated. Check it out: http://newsupermario...2.nintendo.com/

I hope they bring us wallpapers soon! I would love gold ones. When they do I'll be sure to update the gallery!
I just downloaded this last night from the Japanese eShop and have been playing off and on. I'll purchase the retail game card for my North American 3DS when it debuts next month. My first impression was "wow, a spitting image of New Super Mario Bros. for the DS." I mean it's very similar, just as the video shows. Although it's 3D, I prefer playing this Mario side-scroller in 2D. I've racked up nearly 20,000 coins so far and approximately 185 lives. I'm only on World 2. If you've played New Super Mario Bros., there really won't be too many surprises in this installment.

Oh well that kinda stinks to hear that there wont be too many surprises. However just the coin thing is cool enough along with the return of the flying raccoon. I really hope this game shines in 3D. i mean I love playing games in 3D and it would be a let down if i preferred to play in 2D.

Please allow me to rephrase, as I should have chosen my words a bit more carefully.

There are plenty of surprises. As for the gameplay aspect of the game, it's nearly identical to its prequel New Super Mario Bros. For fans interested in a fresh New Super Mario Bros. experience, with 3D visuals and cool levels, it's a great game. Regardless, I still would have bought it and enjoyed the hell out of it.
I read this review and I loved it. I have not played the game yet but from what I already know about the game this review on Destructoid really sums up my feelings about this title and the Wii U title as well. I would ask that you read it in its entirety and then discuss your thoughts on here!

This review is wonderfully written. For the more seasoned fans, nothing is overwhelmingly surprising though. The author did a great job at canvasing all aspects of the game. I agree with everything in that article pretty much to the T.

Me too! I do not normally get into the habit of sharing reviews but this one hit the nail on the head.

Isn't it rather difficult to say the review hit the nail on the head, without even experiencing the game for yourself first?

I think that constitutes as a burn! :boxing:
New commercial for NSMB2

I'm kinda getting creeped out with all the hype that Nintendo is placing on its golden coins.

Why do you say that?

There's gotta be a reason why their hitting so damn heavy on the golden concept. I feel this is a gimmick; it's ridiculous. Put it this way, I'm currently at the end of the game and I only have about 50,000 35,000 coins. I would have been much happier without all the gold, having fun with the newly-designed levels.

Correction: I only have about 35,000 coins.
Did you hear that NSMB2 has Rainbow Levels? There is a trick to unlock them and someone online was so very kind as to reveal that trick to us. If you would like to know check out the video spoiler!

Spoiler
I've already unlocked a few. Thanks though. :)
