Nintendo 3DS Gets A Virtual Card Album

By aquizero on Jul 05 2012 02:51 PM
Have you collected all of your StreetPass Mii Plaza puzzle pieces? Have you been awaiting the next puzzle to be released? Well, Nintendo have now decided to give Nintendo 3DS owners more to collect and trade.

Currently, only available in the UK, users can now collect a Virtual Card Album! Some of the cards will be in 3D, while others will be filled with brand new artwork. The first available cards will be familiar faces such as Mario and Sonic.

There are many returning functions to this mini-game, such as:
  • Exchange happens via StreetPass
  • Some cards can be obtained via SpotPass
  • Coins may be used to purchase cards
  • Rare cards may become available at events
If you live in the UK, visit your eShop today to download the new app! Hopefully this new app will make its way to other regions quickly. Until then we will just have to wait and be envious from afar.

This is cool. I really enjoy getting the cards in Theaterhythm.
You read my mind. I was like oh snap! This is like Theatrhythm.
The non-3D ones look really odd. I want everything, especially everything new, on my 3DS to be in 3D. I think only one of mine was in 3D.
That is right, Vicki has the one up on all of us! You are a lucky woman! Hehehe. So though the non-3D ones may look a little odd in comparison, what do you think about the new app in general? Can you give us more explanations/details about it?
There's not much to it really. I was given 5 starter cards. Four of the cards are not in 3D, and look like screen shots from the Mario & Sonic Olympic game - meaning, adverts. The 5th card was of Sonic and was in 3D. It also makes a sound when you open it. Whoop-de-do.

This is the main screen showing the cards to scroll through.

This must be how you trade your duplicate cards with other people. In case it's too small to read, it says, "Beginning card trade. Make sure the Nintendo 3DS systems' infrared transceivers are in direct line of sight"  (I forgot it even had infrared.)

Oh wow that is cool. I mean even though it doesn't have you totally convinced, this is a good step for Nintendo. Not everyone likes puzzles so cards are a good addition/alternative. Thank you so much for sharing the pictures that really helps to understand the new app!
I suppose if the cards were for Animal Crossing, or a game I like, I might have been more interested. But I guess the biggest let down for me was that the cards weren't even in 3D. I mean, even the Street Pass puzzle pieces will created a 3D image when completed. Why aren't these in 3D? So, to me, they look more like plugs for a rather dull game that I have no intension of buying. Maybe if it were more like the Pokedex, or more interactive it might be more interesting.

Oh, and after I posted earlier I found that I could 'buy' additional cards for 3 play coins each.

I did not realize this whole album was really Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games... that is kind of underwhelming. A trading card system should not have been limited to this franchise. What about cards from Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario, Kirby etc. I am disappointed to say the least.
Well though the cards they have released so far are lame, they will probably release awesome ones in the future so no worries! Even some of the puzzles are boring! But that is cool i mean ill have more to look forward to when/if they release that feature here (since i have all puzzle pieces except 6 pink ones of mario tennis open). Yay cards!
And i was also excited about the cards in theatrhythm!
Anything more to collect and trade on my 3DS is welcomed.
Yes! Thats what im screaming! It makes taking a scroll around a little more exciting! plus ill have more stuff to spend my coins on!
This is a pretty interesting idea. I think the UK is being used as the guinea pig for this feature. If it pans out to be popular enough, improvements might be made before the application is made available to the other regions. It does seem rather odd that the images are only 2D though. I mean, it is an application for the 3DS.

Let's see what happens with this application over the next few months.

@Vicki - Thanks for taking the time to share all those images with us.
That makes sense. UK is being a guinea pig of sorts. Well actually... thinking about it more... the 2012 Olympics are in London this year aren't they? I imagine this application was just put together for the UK in celebration of the Olympics being there this year!

Yes, good point. There's no question that this was developed to help promote the 2012 Olympics. Like Vicki said, it's basically an advertisement.

Yeah. The more I think of it, I would not want this app unless it was not specific to the Olympics. I would love a real trading card album with unique 3D drawings from the people who work on Mario, Metroid, Kirby, Zelda etc. Now that would be something cool.
