Yesterday, a new system update became available for 3DS owners: version 5.0.0-11U. Europe and Japan also received the update under the titles 5.0.0-11E and 5.0.0-11J, respectively. The new update provided the following changes:

Nintendo eShop improvements
  • Users will no longer need to close the Nintendo eShop application to ensure the "Download Later" feature works while the Nintendo 3DS is in Sleep Mode.
  • Other improvements to usability have been made, including the ability to download software update data in the background.
In addition to the eShop improvements, "further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience." Some North American 3DS owners experienced some technical issues while updating, though. If you have experienced any issues, try these instructions that Nintendo have just released.

System Update Fails, Unable to Access Nintendo eShop and System Settings
  • Power the system off.
  • Press the power button, then immediately press and hold down the L button, R button, A button, and Up on the +Control Pad. Keep holding down the buttons until the system update screen is displayed.
  • Tap OK on the system update screen.

Haha, what if they were like, "To fix your 3DS simply press: ↑, ↑, B, A, ↓, →, ↓, ←, X, Y, and then R & L (simultaneously)"

I feel lucky that my update was successful on the first try.
Thanks for posting the "anti-brick" option. This makes me feel a little better about running the update.
Has anyone who had a problem tried this solution yet? If so did it correct the problem?

I'm still a little scared to update!
I'm going to do the update once I get home.

Hey guys! I just got home a few mins ago and did the update.
It took like less than 2 mins.

Happy gaming!!!!

This is so funny!
I learned of the update when I tried a system transfer.  Now I know the system has to be updated first...sigh...so, all five games are now updated...whew
