Xerneas and Yveltal Are The Legendary Pokémon For Pokémon X and Pokémon Y

By Kevin on Jan 09 2013 09:36 AM
The Pokémon Company have just announced the names of the mysterious Legendary Pokémon, as seen during yesterday's Pokémon Direct. Xerneas (pronounced ZURR-nee-us) is the Legendary mascot for Pokémon X, and Yveltal (pronounced ee-VELL-tall) is the Legendary Pokémon for Pokémon Y. No other info is known about these two Legendaries, but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough!

I knew that the names would be "unique". I can't say that I like or dislike the names at this point. It is just nice to know them as more than X and Y.
i was thinking that because the leters X was in blue and Xerneas is blue and the leter Y was red and Yveltal is red now I know that I gona buy Pokémon Y because Yveltal is the awsomnest
I have a theory. These two Pokémon are instantly cooler because they're they first legendary Pokémon to be seen first in 3D.

Just, look at the way the light hits them! Is it not spectacular to see the beams of light reflecting off Xerneas' antlers? Are you not amazed to see the sunlight passing through Yveltal like holding a bright flashlight up to your hand? It feels like Pokémon is new again.

Also, while I really like Xerneas, I think I'll get Pokémon Y because I had gotten Pokémon Red back in the day and this feels like a rebirth of sorts. And Yveltal has like 3 hands that are also wings, so it's somehow cooler.

Do you mean to tell me that playing Pokémon Black 2 Version on my 3DS isn't 3D? This whole time I've been playing that game on my 3DS. I thought it...well, it looked like it was 3D. I mean, it looks really good.

What I meant was that we're not seeing a 2D drawing of the Pokémon as our first-look. We're seeing 3D-CG (potentially in-game) video footage. It's much more modern to show video as well.

I can agree that the 3D-CG elements are really nice in the Pokémon Black/White Version sequels. Even when I played Pokémon White Version, I was struck by how cool the bridge scenes and Pokémon gyms were. They definitely improved the graphics in the franchise over time.

But the Pokémon themselves were still 2D sprites (in the handheld games, at least). Even so, I respected Nintendo for sticking to their observation that "graphics alone don't make a great game." But Pokémon X and Pokémon Y look like they will be more stunning graphics-wise. The Pokémon seem to be depicted in that type of 3D-CG where it's like cell shading and that really suits them. Gone are the days of the 3D-polygonal Pokémon models that felt clunky and not-cute.

Plus, being games for the 3DS will undoubtedly mean these games will have the option to take advantage of the stereoscopic display.

I'm not trying to say that 2D graphics are bad, I really love them actually. (I haven't played Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask yet, but I was sad to see the endearing 2D-style go.) But Pokémon needs to change to stay fresh. Seeing the Pokémon we love, as well as new species, in a new art style that so far looks incredible...it's like a gift for Pokémon fans. Legendary Pokémon are always pretty cool, but we're experiencing the reveal of Xerneas and Yveltal in a unique way.
I like the theory going on that they're also based on chromosomes, like X and Y obviously mean 3 dimensional, if a third installment comes out it'll most likely be called Z. X is a female chromosome and Y is a male chromosome.

Well we will have to see if the game actually has these pre-rendered 3D movie sequences because in the trailer the movie sequence involving the legendary Pokemon has a disclaimer saying "does not represent actual game footage".

I guess I just didn't relay that well enough. It was a failed joke. Not one person, but two people didn't pick up on that. *FAILED STAMP*

It's true. And the Pikachu was clearly not actual game footage. I could see a pre-rendered cinematic occurring in-game when you first "meet" these legends. I mean, at least I think that would be cool. It would be a very RPG thing to do. :P

But I still think seeing them this way makes them a certain percentage cooler. ...that statement I just made may or may not have reminded me of My Little Ponies, and I'm a bit worried, haha!

Aw, no, you tried. ::YOU TRIED STAMP:: I did get the humor in the whole, "It isn't 3D?!" But I thought it might be a bit of sarcasm and then I thought you were trying to say that is 3D, it's just not stereoscopic 3D.

No harm, no foul! It's best to try to be funny and fail than to try to be funny and insult everyone in the process. ::Laughs::
