Brace for Impact: We're Going Down Soon

By Kevin on Jan 21 2017 01:39 PM

In celebration of Nintendo Nerds' upcoming 10-year anniversary, our staff team will roll out new software upgrades, features, and more.

It's been quite some time since I've last published an article here — June 27, 2013 to be exact. As many of you already know, I've been very busy with a website called Nintendo News. In my absence, Chris, our community manager and administrator, along with the help from Classicgamer, our media specialist, and a handful of regulars have held Nintendo Nerds together. They held it together for the past three and a half years with very little help or assistance from myself. Thanks goes out to all of them for their hard work and dedication. They've done a wonderful job.

Last Sunday, I created a topic in our community forums letting everyone know that I planned on bringing subtle, steady changes to Nintendo Nerds in the near future. I'm still going to do that, and I am very excited to start rolling out the new stuff over time. And yes, I do plan on implementing the shoutbox again since everyone seemed to enjoy that. The forums topic I created was more or less an informal heads up. This article, however, provides a more formal announcement that's published on our site's homepage. (I suppose I also wanted to find an excuse to update the homepage since it hasn't had anything published in nine months — roughly the same span of time as a human gestation period.)

As for the specific changes that will take place, I'm still bouncing a few ideas around. Most importantly, our software will soon (shooting for early February) be updated to the latest and greatest version. From there, it will be easier for me to decide what stays and goes. Our Games Database, member game library, friend code pages, reviews, etc. are all things that need to be considered carefully as a ton of work has gone into developing and designing those features. I've already removed our Cheats section, as some of you have already noticed. It's important to note that our website will be down during the software upgrade process — I'll be sure to let everyone know an exact date as the time approaches.

Anyway, it's nice to see everyone here, and I hope you all are doing well. Thanks again for everyone's patience over the years. I guess one could argue that Nintendo Nerds is like a fine wine?

Yeah, I was brainstorming on articles like music from gaming. I just am not a good writer. I don't have the skills to write a decent story in what could be summed up in two sentences.
If we keep reviews, I could write more. If we want to do screenshots again, I can get some those too.

How far we've come

Is it apart of the process for the site to appear backed up?

I remember posting her a few days ago. Everything posted that day seems to have disappeared; and my old notifications were notified as new.

Hi Aintelligent, you're absolutely right. Late last month I changed servers. From the time the site was migrated to the new server, to the time I updated the DNS, there was a lapse of about two or three days -- maybe even four. During that lapse, anything posted wasn't saved, naturally because the site had already been migrated. I apologize for that. I know CG lost a post or two and at least one status update. In total, there were eight posts lost.

As for the updating our forum software, it's still on my to-do list; however, getting around to doing it is taking much longer than I expected. I initially planned the update for "early February." That clearly did not happen. I unexpectedly became extremely busy the first week of February, and my schedule has not slowed down since. Essentially, by the time my normal work day is over, I don't feel like doing anything other than relaxing. I'll get around to it eventually.
Thanks for all your hard work anyway Kevin. We all know that real life comes first, and while there hasn't been much activity on this site, (I check everyday and maybe post a message or two in the games topic) I've been fairly busy on another site that used to be helpful to this site when we had the arcade.
