Contributor Badges

By Kevin on Oct 15 2011 06:14 AM
Okey-dokey (yeah I said it)! I have taken the time to lose more hair by fumbling my way through Photoshop, in an effort to make everyone's life a bit easier. I have created "badges" for our current, active content team. For those who have helped in the past (Cubemaster54 & Doom36@NN), I'd really like for you guys to take a few minutes to create a Mii avatar so I can add those to your badges. It's not difficult at all and it only takes a few minutes. I've explained how those avatars can be created in THIS FORUM TOPIC. Additionally, your Mii can be created on your 3DS and saved to its SD card...making it very easy to send to me via email.

Obviously, no one is going to force you guys to make one of those but it would be nice to add to the badge instead of a generic-looking Mii avatar. I might just create one for you guys, but make you really ugly and the opposite sex or something.

Anyway, the following is the current list of active contributors for the content team. By all means, if you want to help out with News, Reviews, Cheats, Fan Fiction, or any other type of written content let me know. When adding articles to the site, the below images will be used as the article's "Article Image." If you don't know what I'm referring to, go to the site and try adding an article and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Wow that is really cool.
Those look great for somebody who isn't a graphics guy
Thanks. It took me a long time, trust me.
Cube's looks downright malevolent.

Was it a forum topic, or an actual article that was posted on the site?

Since you never answered me CG, I'll go ahead and show you what I was able to dig up. According to this, you never submitted any useless passwords. There's no formatting because I copied and pasted.

I have found a password for Metal Gear that is pretty useless. But, the first four letters spell out a harsh swear word that ryhmes with Duck.

Should we use this? Should the 4 letters be blacked out? Just seeking your opinon.

If it's useless, what's the point?

Because the thing I'm contributing is useless passwords

Still, chances are you can find others.

Now, on a side note. I have changed some things around on the site; namely article categories. Because of the changes, I have re-created the contributor badges. This time, while designing them I left out the corner sash/ ribbon. The new badges will be much more easy to manage since each member only has one badge.

Here are the revised badges for the members who have contributed content to the site.

For anyone interested in contributing content, I am working on a points system that will keep track of how many articles each author has contributed. Once a certain number of points are  gained, you'll have the opportunity to earn some free stuff. More to follow on that.

If you don't have a contributor badge, and want one because you have something you'd like to submit please let me know and I'll create one for you.
OK, final change for the badges. :lol:

Contributor badges will no longer be displayed on the site's front page, next to new articles. It, very quickly, became boring seeing these badges next to new articles. From this point forward, each article will have it's own unique image displayed next to it. This not only makes it easier to tell if there's new article content, but it looks much better. Besides, I found it to be quite redundant to have a member's contributor badge next to each article when they already have their mini avatar displayed in the sidebar to the left. For example, whenever a new article, or topic is posted, it shows up in the sidebar along with the title and time submitted.

So, if you have already submitted content, or are thinking about submitting article content to the site, your process just became much easier for you. In fact, the only fields you need to fill in when submitting an article are:
  • Category
  • Title
  • Body
  • Tags
As far as that article image I was talking about, I'll create it when I see that you've published a new article. This couldn't get any easier, everyone. Really.

The following categories are available for submitting articles: I'm strongly considering creating a "Guides" category as well.

If you guys have any questions, please let me know.
That's great to hear, actually. I've been holding off on submitting articles because of the whole badge thingy. I just submitted an article and it was a breeze. I'm glad the badges aren't a factor in the process anymore. Thanks for that, Kevin.
Not a problem, Alexis. Thanks for submitting the 3DS article. I'm glad you find it easy to post articles on the site. I agree...it's super-easy.

Instead of creating an entirely separate guides category, would it make more sense to rename the cheats category to "Cheats & "Guides?"

That's a good idea but there's only one issue with me setting it up like that. The cheats, as I mentioned above, are not shown on the front page(s) of the site. This is because cheats aren't really considered as original type content, generated by the author. I would think, for the most part, that guides on the other hand fall into the "original" type content category. I mean this would be true if someone created their own guide. Yes, there are a plethora of guides already out there but we're looking for original dynamic content. Besides, it feels pretty damn good when you create your own original content (i.e., guides, reviews, news articles). News articles can sometimes be hard to publish because a lot of people just slap in contents from other sources but it's not that difficult to throw your own spin or opinion on some news.

Does the staff have any input on this?
I remember you (Kevin) working on lists for each system.  I do not remember where they are but if we could tie things to it, maybe put them there?

I know some emulators can create cheats specific to what you want by changing values in the game.

When you say lists for each system, did you mean something like this?

NES
--> Cheats
--> Reviews
--> Guides
--> Etc.
Bump
More like:

NES
--> 10 Yard Fight
--> 8 Eyes
SNES
--> 7th Saga
Gotcha. Yes, that's actually exactly what I'm working on. :)

The time-consuming part is trying to figure out exactly how each page should be designed. Without a doubt though, that is indeed the structure I'm using.

Oh, also those game pages will be able to be edited by members that belong to a certain usergroup (i.e., editors) using a wiki-style editing interface. Cool stuff is headed our way for the game pages for sure.
