GameCube Games And Wii U

By aquizero on May 21 2012 03:14 PM
We all know that Wii U will only truly be backwards compatible with the Wii. This makes sense as Nintendo is known for allowing their new consoles to be one generation-backwards compatible. That being said, there was some talk around the Internet of Nintendo adding "select" GameCube titles to the Wii U via Virtual Console download.

This is exciting but since so much has yet to be revealed, there are many unanswered questions. Here are a few questions I have come up with:
  • Which games will be available?
  • What determines the games that will be offered?
  • What would be the cost?
  • Is cost determined by title or one flat rate for all GC games?
  • How much memory will be the "average" consumption?
  • Will online functionality be available for games that are offered?
  • Will the games be a direct port or with slight revisions?
  • Will there be a way to copy our save date from card to Wii U?
There are more questions than just the ones listed above, but I think I will stop there. I would like to give others a chance to chime in. What games would you like to see? Is this something you would even be interested in?

Even though chances are I won't own the Wii U until its long gone from being the front console, I'd like to see it be able to play Gamecube games. I don't know squat about operating systems consoles use... but would it be THAT more involved to make any Gamecube game able to play?

Now going over the edge would be making it able to hook up to a Game Boy Player. Ha.
It's really too bad that the Wii U doesn't support GameCube media. Maybe they'll [Nintendo] surprise us? It's doubtful but hey, it's wishful thinking. Thinking about it, I'm not even sure that the Wii U media drive would even support such a thing. You'd think, with all the technology of today, that it would be possible. Maybe it is, but maybe it's also a way for Nintendo to cash in on the downloadable GameCube titles as well...limiting us from using the GameCube media that we already have.

Whatever GameCube games they do offer though, I'll guarantee that they'll be be comprised of 1st party titles. Obviously. At what cost, maybe around twenty bucks or so. I'm not sure. It's really too difficult to tell at this point. It's going to happen, there's no doubt. The suspense keeps on building and building. Nintendo, as we know, lay silent...like a sleeping giant.
Yeah they are very silent lately. I guess this is good because it seems like they want little to be revealed before E3. That will make whatever they reveal more impactive. Now if Gamecube games are not covered in E3 I will be very disappointed.

I do agree that they will want to cash in on GC games so I doubt the media disks will work on the new system.
The gamecube is basically worthless now. all the good games that were on the system are being remade or just being reintroduced to the wii anyways. besides now you can buy most of the games on the virtual console.

i will agree that Nintendo has re-introduced some Gamecube games on the Wii with added motion support but certainly not all of them. There are still a large amount that they haven't brought to Wii. I have not checked the Wii Shop Channel for a while but I am relatively certain that it does not offer Virtual Console Gamecube titles. The memory for one game would take too much of your pre-installed Wii memory for that to have ever worked.
they need ALL the gamecube games on there

That would be ideal but it does not seem realistic. I am sure they will only choose the ones they can guarantee will sell. Nintendo is about making money so time and money wasted on making all GC titles digital would not be the best approach.

true i just want SSBM and MKDD thats all i need
they could make a USB to GCN Memory Card adaptor to allow transfer of save data. That could work. As long as I have Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Starfox, and maybe 4SA, I'd be good.
