I Dropped The Wii U Spring System Update Ball

By Kevin on Apr 23 2013 12:49 AM

Hey look, it's Kevin!
Yesterday, — fueled by newly-surfaced details connected to the upcoming Wii U Spring System Update — I published an article titled "Wii U Spring System Update Available Within The Next 24 Hours." It was really exciting. In fact, it was so exciting that it convinced our readership that they'd have a new feature-packed Wii U update waiting for them within the next day. It turns out that it just didn't happen as expected. For that, I apologize to everyone for the misleading information. The truth is, I even fooled myself.

So, you may be wondering why I've taken the time publish an article mostly attributed to expressing apology. First of all, I don't make a habit of publishing misleading content to our readers. That's the biggest reason I'm taking the time to do this. Too many fan-based Nintendo sources already do that. I'd like to think Nintendo Nerds is different because we don't practice that type of journalism. And, I plan to maintain our current style of not doing so. I promise that I'll never cram every single ounce of Nintendo-based news down your throats. There are sites that do that as well.

Secondly, I'm perfectly OK with publicly admitting to the world when I'm wrong, regardless of how significant or insignificant it may seem. How many journalists do you know of that would actually set their pride aside and take to the podium to do something like that? Better yet, how many do you know that would actually make fun of themselves at the same time? If I've made a mistake, I'll admit it. It's just as simple as that.

As far as the article in question is concerned, I should have initially slapped a question mark on the end of the title. Like this: "Wii U Spring System Update Available Within The Next 24 Hours?" Oh well. Hey, I'm an amateur journalist who writes about what he loves. And, I sure the hell don't get paid for anything I do. In reality, I'm paying up to do this. But I do it because I love it and I'm passionate about it: right, wrong, or indifferent. There are other, more costly and volatile hobbies out there that I could be doing. My supportive wife assures me of that. Now that I think about it, I'm not so sure I'd enjoy relying on this sort of thing as my sole purpose of income. If I'm doing something that rewards me with "putting food on the table," then it would feel too much like work. I think I'd also sacrifice quality for quantity. For Nintendo Nerds, I want to maintain the hobby-like feeling. I enjoy that.

Just so everyone knows, I was equally, if not more amped than anyone else about getting the Wii U Spring System update yesterday. Every ten minutes for eight hours straight, I was on my Wii U GamePad checking for the update. I also had (and still do) multiple web pages tabbed on my Browser — such as Nintendo of America's Wii U Summary of System Software Versions web page and Nintendo of Europe's Latest System Update Information for Wii U — that I would refresh about every five minutes. That may seem a bit obsessive compulsive, but I'm like that when it comes to stuff like this.

Anyway, I just wanted to extend a journalistic apology to our readers and fans and poke some light-hearted fun at myself for goofing. I've never published anything quite like this before, but it feels good to express my thoughts like this. Inadvertently, I even shared some personal information about myself that you may not have already known. I can assure everyone that the next article related to the Wii U Spring System update will be accurate and worth the wait. Until then, all we can do is...wait.

I'll continue to check for updated information between now and the end of the week. Hopefully, we'll get the update by Thursday so we can enjoy playing some classic titles over the weekend.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one constantly checking for a system update. :-)

well, I held out until just now, 2:23am CST. I'll just wait for the official announcement or when I see it pop up on my Wii U.

Oh who a I kidding, I'll be checking first thing in the morning! :P
Though I personally do not think this public apology was necessary I understand why you did so and it is appreciated. I think most Nintendo Nerds know that this website is not shoveling out news and rumors like others do. So, thank you.

I am also very excited for this update.
I had a great time reading this.  Thanks Kevin!
I love a look behind the curtain from time to time as well. I love Nintendo Nerds as an ad-free (the only ad-free?) Nintendo fan community, but also as a place where I'm making friends and spreading the joy of the 3DS system.

Kevin is Nintendo Nerds and it's because of his character that this site is what it is. He's the captain of the ship and though he may err, for he is mostly human*, he never ceases in striving to do better. And he does this for all of us, and I for one am grateful and greatly appreciative.

Nintendo Nerds is my internet. It's the only fan community to which I belong. I have not yet experienced Miiverse, but I imagine that Nintendo Nerds is like what Miiverse would be if it were bitten by a genetically mutated spider. Nintendo Nerds is Super Spider Miiverse. And a metaphor about all being connected in this wonderful web goes here.

And a snappy ending goes here.

(It might be dinner time and I might be ending this abruptly, my apologies, haha!)

* Did you know he's also part Pokémon and related to many gods and heroes? It's true! Absolutely.
You da man Kevin. No apologies necessary for me. :)
