Prior to today, pre-emptive Wii U owners were not yet able to utilize Nintendo Network functionality and services such as Miiverse, Wii U eShop, Wii U Chat and Internet. These services required an official software update from Nintendo. To make use of these services, owners are required to set up their Nintendo Network ID. Just a few hours ago, that software update was official made available. Not only are the above Nintendo Network features now available, but an official Nintendo Network ID format has been revealed.
  • Use between six and 16 characters. You can use numbers, letters, periods, dashes, and underscores.
  • You cannot use punctuation as the first or last character or your ID. You also cannot use two or more punctuation characters in a row.
Don't forget to add your NNID to our brand-new Nintendo Network ID (NNID) page!

Nice. I keep reading that the software update takes a long time. That is unfortunate when you want to immediately play when you bring the system home. Oh well. Thank you for the details.

You can play immediately. The update installs the online services and functionality.
