Nintendo have just announced that its new television application, Nintendo TVii, will become available for download in North America and Canada starting tomorrow, December 20th. While Nintendo TVii is a free downloadable application, it will still lack various functionality for its initial launch. Features such as programming and accessing content stored on a DVR device, will be absent. Apparently, Nintendo is still working out those details with cable companies Comcast and DirecTV to incorporate those options.

After Dec. 20, you'll never look at your TV the same way again. Wii U owners have already experienced the transformative effect that the GamePad has on game play and social interaction.

Nintendo TVii shows how the integrated second screen of the GamePad can also transform and enhance the TV viewing experience. Welcome to the new world of TVii.

Nintendo TVii was initially planned as a day-one launch application on November 18th, 2012 in North America. Nintendo further comments that Netflix and TiVo support are absent as well, and that those options are both coming "next year." Basically, with the initial Nintendo TVii launch, you'll be able to utilize an online guide for TV, Hulu Plus, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. You'll also be able to search Wikipedia and IMdb (International Movie Database) and share comments via various social networks.

Now this is good news. I mean this should have been available at launch but it did not take them too long to get this up and running. If all works well this could be another reason for sales. Some casual gamers or non-gamers will really like this feature.
