Nintendo, Wii Need U To Give Us Something New!

By aquizero on Jul 27 2012 08:29 AM
The Wii U is almost here and this is an exciting time for Nintendo. This brand-new, next generation console will mark Nintendo’s first step into High-Definition (HD)! This is all thanks to the updated multi-core processor and HD graphics hardware. Did I lose you? Don’t worry, that is not what this post is about. Just know that is thanks to those pieces of hardware that make it all possible!

HD graphics is not a new concept in the world of gaming. So Nintendo could not just release a Wii HD and be set for the gaming console wars. Instead, Nintendo gave us the Wii U GamePad to help differentiate them from the competition. This new peripheral will work alongside the updated graphics and processing power to deliver a brand “new” experience.

New is the word I want to focus on in this article. When I hear the word “new,” I am immediately intrigued and wish to know more. What makes it new and why should I care? Well, Nintendo have already had two huge opportunities to explain how the Wii U is new and why we should care. The 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, or more commonly known as the E3 Conference, has come and gone. I think we all have a good idea on how this system is a game changer, so to speak. My question is, "will this new system be enough to drive sales?" I do not think it is. There is something missing from the lineup of revealed titles. It is time for a brand-new franchise!

With any new Nintendo system, it is to be expected that current franchises will be making a brand-new title. Yes, it is a bit more exciting this year as many people have been awaiting the days of, let’s say, an HD Legend of Zelda title. I am one of those people. One thing Nintendo have done recently is brought back some life to past franchises. Can anyone say Kid Icarus? I do not think anyone can deny the new-found success of the Kid Icarus franchise with the incredible 3DS title Kid Icarus: Uprising. This, however still isn’t enough.

I feel that Nintendo need to step into unfamiliar territory in order to create a truly unique and new franchise. We certainly do not need more games of the platforming and side-scrolling genre. That is Mario’s department and where he shines brightly. It is even safe to say that The Legend of Zelda franchise is Nintendo’s core RPG (Role-Playing Game) genre. What else is there? Well, I am not about to go through every Nintendo franchise. This is better left as a discussion point. So, I ask you, what genre is there that should make up a brand-new franchise for Nintendo?

... im stumped cant really think of one.. I enjoy the games as they are and, yes, they are somewhat repetitive (animal crossing, mario titled games, ect.) but thats probably why we like em so much! just sayin im probably gonna be playing pokemon, mario, and animal crossing for a very very long time! :3
How about a new Metroid game; one where you play first person on the Wii U with the gamepad and then, link it to a side scrolling version on the 3DS, opening various levels between the two that you can't get by themselves.
Correct me if I am wrong but do we have a franchise that is based solely underwater? If not that could be a new direction with a brand new character and storyline etc. Even an underwater mechanic could be a great way to use the wii u gamepad. Can someone say sonar?
At this point, I'm with Skitty.

Everything thus far is proving to work out just fine. I'm really not too sure it would help matters if Nintendo, themselves, created a new franchise. They already have all the heavy-hitters and have refined those titles beautifully over the past three decades.
I feel like the next series they should bring back is Ice Climbers. It would make sense considering it has been in the past 2 smash bros.
I actually like that idea. The Ice Climbers did look pretty cool in Smash Bros. A better insight into their story would be cool.
I think Nintendo should bring back earthbound to the next generation. Smash Bros brings all these characters back, but then we don't see them in any other game, hopefully kid icarus will be a good indicator of what's to come.

This is actually a neat things these guys are working on

My apologies. I keep forgetting that you're not retro, that you're a new-gen gamer.

Thanks for the info, Bettie. I hear that the new FIFA is going to be awesome!
I was sooooo dissapointed with the news. During E3 EA & Nintendo both said that there was going to be "unprecedented support" for the WiiU. I'm sorry but three games on WiiU does not make it unprecedented and the ones they did announce I don't play :(.

I agree. Though EA may be mainly known for their sports titles that is not all they bring to the table and I would have liked to have seen other games mentioned. I will not play any of the games they revealed.
