Ever heard of Rekall? They sell those fake memories.

Several online sources have recently reported that Nintendo could be in the process of recalling one of their Wii U models. Currently, the all-white Wii U Basic Set, which features 8GB of internal storage, isn't faring so well compared to its bigger brother — the all-black Wii U Deluxe Set. A number of differences can be found between the two sets.

Wii U Basic Set (All-White)
  • 8GB internal flash memory
  • Does not include bundled software
  • Is not eligible for the Deluxe Digital Promotion
  • Retails for $299.99
Wii U Deluxe Set (All-Black)
  • 32GB internal flash memory
  • Includes bundled software (Nintendo Land)
  • Is eligible for the Deluxe Digital Promotion
  • Retails for $349.99
  • Includes Wii U GamePad Stand
  • Includes Wii U GamePad Cradle
  • Includes Wii U Console Stand

According to this image, as provided by Kotaku, it says:

3. Nintendo Wii U Basic Recall - Two Week Preparation
On Tuesday, 6/18, all stores will need to return all new/unopened Wii U Basic (020359).
.. Stores that have 10 or more in stock will receive shipping cartons from the DC.
.. All other stores will need to save shipping cartons for this recall..

Based on this information, it's not surprising that the Wii U Basic Set could meet its demise. With only 8GB of internal storage, consumers are very limited with digital space if they plan on not using an external USB storage device. Additionally, the fifty dollar difference is hardly worth it when tallying up all the goodies that the Wii U Deluxe Set offers over it.

What's most likely to happen, is Nintendo will market an all-white Wii U Deluxe Set. This is a rather obvious conclusion, as it was already announced for the Japanese region one week ago.

UPDATE: Nintendo of America's Senior director of Corporate Communications, Charlie Scibetta, has provided a statement to website Polygon:

There is a current misperception about Wii U hardware. To clarify: Nintendo is working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market. Consumers looking for either model will continue to find them available.

I know what movie I have to see now.

So, will the recalled White Wii U Basic systems be turned into White Wii U Deluxe sets? Like, will the switch out the memory and resell 'em? Is that even possible? If they want to, they can give me one. I won't mind.
Will be interesting to see where this goes...
I'm with dialglyph here: I'm interested to see where this goes.. everyone I know that got a wii u didn't even consider getting the white one! I still wonder why they had the white option? Just a 50 dollar difference?
If this is true, I believe this will be an absolutely terrible hit to the Wii U.  It won't help one bit when the next gen systems start generating buzz, to have one of their consoles recalled.  This plus the stagnant game lineup are very dangerous.  Don't get me wrong I'm a Nintendo Nerd for a reason, and own a Wii U, but I'm a little worried.
Nintendo have responded to this situation. Please see article for update. And, we'll still see that 32GB White Deluxe Set in time. I'm sure of it!

Glad to see this isn't a full recall.  Thanks for the breaking news updates Kevin!

Why would it worry you if the white 8GB model was succeeded by a white 32GB model?

My guess is Nintendo researched the current economic climate and decided on the 50 dollar difference option to see what people were willing to purchase. Perhaps Nintendo profited more with the White 8GB option or the cost to produce the 32GB Wii U model has dropped significantly since launch and now they're settling on that option.

In any case, we may never really know. At the very least, it is another purchase option for players to consider.

Sorry, I misread this thing.  I though it meant they were going to recall, like make people bring them back to get fixed recall.  I now see that I didn't pay enough attention to the details of this story.  UPDATE:  I am no longer worried.
I totally purchased the deluxe black one. If it had just been the difference in memory, I would have gone white. But there were too many other goodies involved.

In other news: they should have had limited edition gold ones for everyone who preordered. Now that would have been awesome.
It is pretty well known by a majority of you that my choice color for the Wii U was white. I only settled for black because of the increased memory and the other goodies. I would have loved for Nintendo to have had only one version of this console available in both colors.
