Pokemon in High-Definition

By aquizero on Aug 28 2012 03:08 PM
It is no surprise that the new focus for Nintendo is High Definition (HD) graphics. With the upcoming release of the Wii U home console, Nintendo will finally give us native 1080p resolution! Now, we eagerly await more details on how The Pokémon Company will take advantage of this upgraded hardware.

The thought of Pokémon in HD is exciting. What better way to bring these 649 Pokémon to life, than in glorious High Definition. I can envision how the addition of better texture and water reflections could breathe new life into a pathetic Pokémon such as Magikarp. Its useless "splash" attack could become a sight to behold as pond water glistens while it bounces around aimlessly! Well, maybe I am reaching a bit with that last statement but you get the idea.

My main concern is that The Pokémon Company will follow suit with New Super Mario Bros. U's art direction. If you have not seen trailers for New Super Mario Bros. U, I can tell you that the art style is taken directly from New Super Mario Bros Wii. If The Pokémon Company does decide to reuse their current art style, we are looking at Pokémon that closely resemble those found in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond (Wii) or the 3DS application Pokédex 3D. I will not deny that Pokémon look adorable in simplistic and bright art style, but isn’t now the time for something new? There certainly is a line that cannot be crossed in Pokémon if they care to retain its charm. For example, we are never going to see Pokémon as detailed and fearsome as the monsters of the Monster Hunter series. This would be too much of an extreme approach. In the end, the balance of too much detail and not enough detail is up to Nintendo and The Pokémon Company to decide.

The fact remains that Pokémon is catered toward the younger generation. In order for Pokémon HD to be successful, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have to keep the younger generation happy, which may mean that the current art style be maintained. Though there are many lifetime Pokémon fans like myself, who have been eagerly awaiting a visually rich home console experience.

How do you see Pokémon in HD?

I really wish they would use the WiiU to make a Pokemon game where you travel to each region and Pokemon only becoming available in the region they originally came from. Imagine what you could do with the WiiU tablet!

Ahh, if only I could talk directly to The Pokemon Company!

I agree that would be awesome. Now imagine that is a lush 3D environment and in HD where you travel in the Viridian forest and caterpie are climbing up the tree barks. You have to move your character slowly to approach them in order to engage in battle! All this would be amazing in HD.
Aquizero,
You already know if Pokemon Company ever looked my way, I'd help make the greatest Pokemon ever (if course 'til they ask me to top  it) cause I have legit Pokemon monsters, plots, moves, types, mini games, etc. My day will come when my DARK/GROUND Lion will grace the cover with co-cover LIGHT/FIRE Tiger ("did he say LIGHT Type? yea he did") a whole new type(s), call The Pokemon Company....

Umm..with my eyes? LOL!  All kidding aside, it would be amazing!
This is a great article, Ben.

I believe it's only a matter of time before a main series Pokémon title makes its way to the Wii U. A main series title for the 3DS will most likely occur first, but I do believe it will happen for the Wii U console.

I'm not at all interested in a dramatic art style change for Pokémon. In fact, I think that might tarnish what Pokémon stands for. The further we drift away from the roots, the worse it will be for the future of Pokémon. Who knows though, maybe The Pokémon Company, Game Freak and Nintendo can come together and think of something creative as far as a new art style goes. I just hope the art style doesn't evolve too much though. Besides, who said Pokémon, in its current art form, can't be viewed in High-Definition? I think that would look fantastic so long as the art stays in tact and cartoonish.

Yes I certainly know that you have an exorbitant amount of ideas for Pokemon. Maybe one day you can get them to the right people and who knows?
It would be terrific for them to make a game where they used the graphics similar to the pokedex 3d.. Mini games as a plus.. I loved the first pokemon stadium for the n64 those games were addictive and cute!
Pokemon do look pretty nice in the Pokedex 3D app. I would just hope the next leap in graphics they could slightly improve on the design.
As much as i hate to say it. Its probably going to just be another poképark thing...

Personally, i could go for a new Pokémon snap! Think about how amazing that would be!

Yes I feel that is what they will stick with as well. I guess if the Wii U game is not just a side game I would be happy. There would also be no excuse that they could not have all 649 Pokemon be available in the game.
