Shovel Knight, Can Ya Dig It?

You won't be digging up any shovelware with Shovel Knight.

Shovel Knight — a current Kickstarter project proposed by Los Angeles, CA independent (indie) game developer Yacht Club Games — is an upcoming video game scheduled to be released for the Wii U and 3DS eShops and Windows PC. In Shovel Knight, you'll fill the deep boots of a pint-sized knight who's about to take on a planet-sized quest. This is no ordinary knight. By wielding a multipurpose weapon called the "ShovelBlade," his goal is to slice through evil, traverse through tricky platform stages, and rescue his loved one from the evil clutches of the Enchantress — an evil magic-casting witch. When the going gets tough, the tough get digging. Or, something like that.

What else is so great about a shovel-wielding knight in search for a helpless princess?

How about the fact that it's slathered with a beautiful coat of 8-bit polish? How about the fact that it has platforming and gameplay characteristics similar to those found in Mega Man, Castlevania, Dark Souls, and even Zelda? How about the fact that there's themed bosses and levels and features a super-sensational music score that'll be chiming through your brain, even when sleeping? Fun fact: Jake “Virt” Kaufman is the audio composer for the Shovel Knight soundtrack. If you've played Mighty Switch Force!, Contra 4, Shantae, or Double Dragon Neon, you've heard what the man is capable of producing.

The Shovel Knight Kickstarter project has a $75,000 goal, which needs to be met on, or prior to, Saturday April 13th at 10:59pm EDT. At the time of this writing, the project has funded $54,771 with the support of 2,384 backers (people who contributed to the project by pledging at least a $1). With the support from fans, Shovel Knight can become a reality for us all. If you're a fan of brilliantly created indie games and would like to see Shovel Knight make landfall, I'd suggest showing your support. Without you, terrific games like this would never be a possibility.

I could go on and on about how incredible this game looks and sounds, but here's a short video that gives you a good taste for what the game is all about.

This looks pretty cool. I like the art style and the music is very enjoyable.
This looks pretty good. It looks like it has stuff where you need to think wisely on what to do to avoid danger and stuff.
I can't stop thinking of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourgalss and Spirit Tracks when I see Shovel Knight. Looks so much like those invincible guardian knights from those two games.

I was just thinking the same thing.
I downloaded Shovel Knight for 3DS a couple of days ago. Although I have not yet gotten very far, the game is one of the best retro-style games I have played in some time. It kind of out-DuckTales DuckTales with the pogo mechanic. At a price of $15, it's a little expensive for a eShop game, but the excellent gameplay and slick presentation makes it well worth it.

I completely agree, Chris. I bought it on 3DS too, and I couldn't put it down until I beat it. Every time I tried, my hands gravitated back toward my system. What a great game. I really enjoyed the music as well.
^ I guess you can put that in the games beaten in 2014. Don't worry, only 102 left to catch up with me
I love this game. Still haven't beaten it. Just unlock the shovel beam? is that what it is called...shoot beams from your shovel with full hearts. Love it.

BTW, I have been away for awhile. I am back though. I never updated my favorites and then my work shut this site down, but now websense is opened up.
I'm just not very good at this game, I'm still hung up at the Explodatorium.
On October 13th, Shovel Knight is heading to retail! Priced at $19.99, physical copies of Shovel Knight will be released for Wii U, 3DS, PS4 and Xbone. It comes with a real instruction manual too.

I might pick it up once the price goes down. Cheap I know but I rarely buy games new.
This one, you might want to. Shovel Knight is absolutely worth 20 bucks. It's fantastic.

I'm notoriously cheap when it comes to gaming or anything, I do my shopping at goodwill! I mean I waited on amiibo until they were discounted and you saw what happened.
