Wii U Is Region-Locked

On page 10 of Famitsu volume 1242, it states, "なお、Wii Uにはプレイできる地域が制限されるリージョンロック機能が搭載されており、その地域で販売されたソフト以外はプレイできない。" A direct Japanese translation of this is, "In addition, the feature region lock the region can play the Wii U is limited is mounted, you can not play other than software that is sold in the area."

Basically, this is stating that the Wii U is region-locked, which means only games released for a specific region are able to be played on that region's Wii U console.

This may have come as a surprise to most, but was it really surprising? The Wii and 3DS were both region-locked, so why would the Wii U have been region-free? Does this news affect you at all?

I did not expect any different. I never cared for importing games anyway so this does not affect me at all.
No and yes. Not surprised by this in the least, but I feel I may be affected by it in the future, if any interesting Japan-exclusive games come out. Or if Nintendo of America/Europe decides to mess with Australia and not bring some games over here. I'm still mildly upset at the decision to not release Excitebots: Trick Racing here.

Nothing unexpected at all. In fact, software protection will only continue to become more and more stringent with time. The only thing that bums me is that I'll have to buy another console once I learn Japanese, along with the games. I understand that, though but it's kind of a pain. I wish there was some sort of program that Nintendo could offer to allow for games from multiple regions, to be played on a single console. I wouldn't care if it was a paid subscription, i would still participate in something like that.
