Thanks to some handy translation work from Cheesemeister, many lingering questions have been answered when it comes to how the Wii U will work with the Wii. Below are ten questions and answers from Nintendo of Japan's support section for Wii U. Unfortunately, both Wii U support sections from Nintendo of Japan and Nintendo of America have to be referenced since neither never seem to have the same information.
  • Can the Wii U play Wii or GameCube software?
    • Wii software, Wii Virtual Console software, and WiiWare can be played from the Wii Menu on the Wii U. GameCube software is not supported.
  • Can WiiWare or Wii Virtual Console software be purchased and downloaded on the Wii U?
    • Yes. They can be purchased by accessing the Wii Shopping Channel in the Wii Menu on the Wii U.
  • Can the Wii U GamePad be used to play Wii software?
    • No. The Wii U GamePad functionality is not available when using the Wii Menu.
  • Can I use all the functionality of the Wii when using the Wii Menu to play Wii software?
    • Most Wii software can be played, but WiiConnect24, among a few other functions, cannot be used.
  • Can WiiWare, Wii Virtual Console software, other downloads, save data, registered Wii Points, and so on be transferred to the Wii U?
    • Yes. By doing a Software and Data Transfer, WiiWare, Wii Virtual console software, and other downloads will be made available through the Wii Menu on the Wii U. See the home page for details (JP).
  • Can Mii characters from the Wii or 3DS be transferred to the Wii U?
    • Yes. Mii characters on the 3DS can be imported directly into the Mii Studio on the Wii U via QR Code or wireless transmission. Mii characters on the Wii can be imported into the Mii Channel in the Wii Menu. After that, Mii characters can be copied from the Mii Channel using a feature in the Wii U's Mii Studio.
  • What is required to transfer from the Wii to the Wii U?
    • The following is required: 1 TV (having 2 is convenient), the Wii U to transfer to, the Wii to transfer from, an SD Card (512 MB and larger), and an Internet connection. Even with only 1 TV, TV input can be switched back and forth to facilitate the transfer.
  • Can presents be sent to other people like in the Wii Shopping Channel?
    • There is no present-sending feature like in the Wii Shopping Channel.
  • Can Wii Points on the Wii Shopping Channel or the remaining balance on the 3DS Nintendo eShop be used to make purchases?
    • No. Wii Points are only for the Wii Shopping Channel, and the remaining balance on the 3DS can be used only on the 3DS Nintendo eShop.
  • Can Wii software be purchased and downloaded?
    • WiiWare and Wii Virtual Console software can be purchased through the Wii Shopping Channel in the Wii Menu.

This answered some outstanding questions I had. Now, I am trying to get a mental picture of what the Wii U menu looks like. GRrrr!
I am not sure how I feel about the Wii and Wii U being separated so much. So you have your new system but if you want to play Wii games you have to change the mode to the standard Wii mode. Also, some functionality may no longer work. To me it really seems like they would rather you stay with your Wii and also own a Wii U. There are simply no benefits of transferring your data over besides it being on one system. Maybe in time they will work a solution to allow for games to be played on the gamepad, until then I am disappointed.

I see what you mean, but I don't think it's going to be a huge problem.  Also, how much are you really wanting to play your old Wii games instead of these new Wii U games.  Also, you can still play all your Wii games just not on the gamepad right?  That's not so bad.
I don't mind this. I am keeping my black Wii. I still have some Wii games to play and the Wii can still be useful when I get my Wii U. I can have my Wii U in my living room and my Wii for my bedroom. Or I probably put both in the living room. Thinking of a master plan :P
Yeah I get that the separation between the wii u and wii interface may not be a big deal. What is a big deal is the features that wont work. They have yet to specify which features will not work? Wii Speak? I mean that would really affect Animal Crossing City Folk players. So, that should really be clarified before people consider switching over.
Will I still be able to play Mario Kart Wii online after transferring data?
You should be able to, but you will most likely end up with a new friend code.
