"With Pokémon GO, you’ll discover Pokémon in a whole new world—your own! Pokémon GO is built on Niantic’s Real World Gaming Platform and will use real locations to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokémon. Pokémon GO allows you to find and catch more than a hundred species of Pokémon as you explore your surroundings.(...)

At a certain point in the game, you’ll be asked to join one of three teams. Once you join a team, you’ll gain the ability to assign Pokémon you’ve caught to open Gym locations or to a Gym where a team member has assigned a Pokémon. (...)

Pokémon GO is available for download at no charge on the App Store and Google Play. Pokémon GO is free to play, with loads of fun things to do and Pokémon to discover at every turn.(...)

With the Buddy Pokémon feature, you can choose a favorite Pokémon from your collection to travel at your side, opening up in-game rewards and experiences."

I walked past a group of about 15 people Saturday, all playing pokemon go. I thought "Oh, what a coincidence!" Turns out it wasn't. If you ever come across something like that it's because there is a raid going on. A raid is an event where many players must work together in order to defeat either a raid Boss or a Lengendary. Raids can be small like the one I saw, or they can grow really big and have over 100 trainers; especially in very busy areas. If ever you come across one, don't hesitate to join. No matter what level you're at in the game, you can always lend some damage and help catch them all.

A tip for using the buddy system:
As much as having your favourite pokémon by your side is fun, why not pair up with a pokémon you're struggling to evolve? Like one that demands a lot of candy (like magikarp...), or one that's rare in your area.
Having one of these type of problematic pokémons by your side helps you collect more candy; allowing you to evolve them at the same time as the rest. Thus making better use of lucky eggs ;)
Starve your distractions and feed your focus.
